Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: Nearly one year after his death at the Caracol Archaeological Site at the hands of suspected Guatemalan gunmen illegally in Belizean territory, the family of 18 year old Danny Conorquie, special constable attached to the Tourism Police Unit, is to receive a reported $125,000 in compensation from the Government of Belize, according to Channel 5 News.
Speaking with the station, Danny’s mother Jean says they are preparing to honor her son’s memory with a two-day event this coming weekend.
She says the compensation, or anything else, can’t bring back Danny, and she accepted the offer because “It’s better than nothing.”
The amount is more than the original offer of about $100,000 and Jean Conorquie says it will help to take care of her family, including two other children and a grandchild.
She describes the upcoming memorial: “We are having a “Remembering the Hero, Danny.” We are having a celebration marathon on the field, basketball field; running race, football games…well the marathon is big with the football. We have like sixteen teams for Saturday and Sunday so we are having a two-day marathon.
It starts from eight a.m. in the morning to ten in the night and then we have the dance the Saturday night until three the morning. And then the Sunday, we have the marathon again from eight in the morning through till seven.”
Conorquie’s murder remains unsolved.
