Monday, October 19, 2015. BMG: The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) is asking the general public to remain vigilant as weather conditions are improving in some areas but receding waters may cause the Mopan and Belize Rivers to flood. More showers are on the way until Thursday when improvement is expected.
A release from NEMO earlier this morning, stated that classes for schools in Corozal, Orange Walk and Belize Rural along the Old Northern Highway have been suspended until further notice and advised the public to be careful of crocodiles, snakes, unsafe drinking water as well as illegal electrical connections, which can be hazardous to health.
It also discourages persons from walking through flood waters and informed that the Ministry of Health will be doing larviciding and vector control activities as soon as the water goes down.
As it pertains to transportation, only San Pedro express has resumed operations from San Pedro and buses are running as per normal.
The release closes by listing shelters that have been made available in areas being affected. Those are:
- ITVET which currently has 80 people and YWCA which has 27 people, both in Belize City.
- San Jose Community Center in Orange Walk which currently has 60 people.
- Guadalupe R.C with 16 people and Mary Hill with 6 people, both in Corozal.
- San Estevan Community Centre is being opened in Orange Walk to provide shelter for 48 additional residents.
