By Aaron Humes: Belize City resident Bert Vasquez has been accused of multiple crimes, including alleged child molestation in Cayo, multiple alleged abductions in the Belize District, and most sensationally, the murder of 13-year-old Jasmine Lowe back in June of 2012.

The school girl had gone missing in her uniform only to be found dead days later in a remote farm in Cristo Rey Village, Cayo. The case held the public’s attention for weeks and led to a Jasmine Alert program to report missing children.

Back in March of 2014, San Ignacio Magistrate Narda Morgan found that there was sufficient evidence to try Vasquez for the murder notwithstanding that the state of decomposition of the body left the cause of death undetermined. But the trial date on the charge has not been set.

Today, Vasquez was in court in Belize City for an unrelated charge and his attorney Oscar Selgado told the media that Police, in fact, does not have sufficient evidence to convict his client on the murder charge.

The case for which Vasquez was in court this morning, involves an accusation of abduction and sexual assault in Ladyville that took place even before the Jasmin Lowe murder. Trial is expected in May.
