By Aaron Humes: This week San Pedro police revealed that several persons approached the Town Council for the routine renewal of their drivers’ licenses from Orange Walk. Unfortunately for them, the
OW DLdocuments turned out not to be genuine. Police have begun an investigation and narrowed their focus on the person they believe to be responsible.

Police on the island have contacted authorities in Orange Walk Town about the case. Orange Walk Town Mayor Kevin Bernard in Belize City today said the licenses in question are the older, pre-printed, laminated variety as opposed to the newer biometric kind brought into use in 2013. There are several differences between them: the front of the fake licenses carries the logo of the town’s transport authority, but the seal on the back is of the Department of Transport – drivers’ licenses are issued by the former, not the latter. There are other more subtle differences but they all add up to a fake document.

But is someone in Sugar City responsible? The Mayor believes the culprit took advantage of the system, but points out that they would have been found out as they were here, very quickly. Police investigations continue.
