By BBN Staff: This year’s La Ruta Maya challenge was fiercely competitive, with over 61 teams coming from all over the country to take part in the longest canoe race in Central America.
The Belize Bank Bulldogs male and female teams, however, both finished in the top rankings of the competition despite grueling conditions and stiff competition.
The Belize Bank Bulldogs female team finished in first place for the female category. The win is even more impressive considering this is only the team’s second outing in the race.
Anna Camp, Delilah Cruz and Lilly Cruz showed grit, determination and dedication in overcoming several obstacles, including a capsized canoe.
The male team, comprised of seasoned paddlers Armin Lopez, Amado Cruz and Byron Cruz placed third overall despite several unexpected obstacles.
The team battled big waves between San Ignacio and Banana Bank causing them to lose momentum. On the second leg between Banan Bank and Double Head Cabbage, the team’s canoe was hit by another, causing them to spin around in strong currents.
Yet, despite the obstacles, the team held steady, remained focused and paddled relentlessly into 3rd place behind Koop Sheet Metal and BTL.
The Belize Bank is proud of both teams and congratulates all the participants. Belize Bank also gave special mention to the teams’ mentor, Gerard Martinez.
