By Aaron Humes: A group of tourists from a cruise ship are leaving Belize with unpleasant memories after they were held up this afternoon at the Altun Ha Maya site along the Old Northern Highway.
Tour guide from Hattieville, Clifford Hoare, and several tourists lost cash and other valuables to two armed and masked men.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Edward Broaster, officer commanding Eastern Division (Rural) explained that six tourists were with Hoare at the site around 1:10 this afternoon when they were held up.
Interestingly, the transport from the cruise ship had left just minutes before, and the tourist police acting as security had left along with them.
Police at this hour have detained a number of suspects from the village closest to the ruin, Santana. According to Broaster, the robbers would have had to have knowledge of the site and surrounding area to pull off this attack. Police investigations continue.
