By Dalila Ical: Osmer Sabido, accused of the stabbing death of his girlfriend, Christie Carrasco on February 28th 2011 took the stand this afternoon for well over two hours.
Sabido gave his account of what transpired on the night of February 28th, saying he first arrived at the house the couple shared in the San Lorenzo housing site at around six that evening and met an enraged Carrasco, who demanded to know why he was late. She accused him of being with another woman. He claims she started to argue with him and in an effort to ignore her, he went to the kitchen. At that point, Sabido testified, Carrasco left their house in her car.
She returned between 8:00 and 8:30 that night and he said she continued arguing with him while he tried to avoid her. He adds that it was during that argument she told him she thought she was pregnant for another man. At that point, Sabido says he “reacted and slapped her” then went into the kitchen.
He was there for a few minutes, he says, then he heard footsteps behind him and when he turned around he saw her approaching him with a stabbing motion. He reacted, he said, and held her hands. During a brief struggle, Sabido testified, Carassco used her left hand to try to overpower him but he jerked her and her hands went downward and she stabbed herself to her left knee and cut her left thumb.
When he saw blood, Sabido says he spoke to her but he was frightened and walked towards the hall. He says Carrasco followed him and grabbed him by his shirt and attempted to stab him once again. Another struggle ensued and both fell to the ground, he said, and that is when she was stabbed to the chest. Sabido continues to say that he tried to get up but that Carrasco pulled him down and he fell on top of her again and that was when he noticed the blood on her chest.
“I was so frightened at that moment,” Sabido said, recounting that he took the knife and put it in the front seat of Carrasco’s car. That was when police arrived. Carrasco, who was inside, walked out of the house and onto the road. Police “grabbed” him, Sabido said and placed Carrasco in the police mobile and transported her to the hospital.
On March 9th, a Crown witness, Dyon Faber had said he had seen Sabido make a stabbing motion at Carrasco but when cross examined by his attorney, Oscar Selgado, he (Sabido) denied any truth to that statement or that Faber held him by his hands on the evening of February 28th.
Sabido denied stabbing Carrasco and said that it was “a lie” when the prosecution suggested he attacked her with a knife. The case was adjourned to Thursday March 17th for closing arguments and submissions.
