By Chrisbert Garcia: Belizean authorities have reached out to Guatemala’s Civil Police for assistance in locating a stolen taxi that was taken from 61-year-old San Ignacio driver, Albino Itzab yesterday afternoon.
The car was reportedly taken by two males and a female after he picked them up in Bullet Tree Village, Cayo District.
Itzab told police that around 1:45 p.m., he picked up two Hispanic men in their early 20s and a Hispanic woman who looked to be in her 50s from in front of Caoba Restaurant.
The trio told him that they wanted to go to Calla Creek but after passing the police check point in Bullet Tree, one of the men who was seated at the back, put a knife to Itzab’s throat and demanded “everything”.
An Alcatel phone was taken from his wife who was in the taxi at the time, as well as her walking stick, a wallet containing $200, and all documents that were inside the vehicle. The men then ordered the couple to get out before making good their escape in the taxi valued at $9000.
A search team comprising of San Ignacio Police, Belize Defense Force (BDF) soldiers and special branches of the police department quickly arrived to comb the area but their search was unsuccessful, hence the reason Guatemalan authorities were contacted to assist on that side of the border. Investigations are ongoing.
