By Chrisbert Garcia: Dating back to 1993, the United Nations designated March 22 as World Water Day and each year since then, a theme has been set for this important day, corresponding to a current or future water related challenge.
This year’s theme is “Water and Jobs”, inspired by the 1.5 billion people who work to provide safe water for us and are not recognized or given basic labor rights. It focuses on how enough quantity and quality of water can change workers’ lives, as well as transform societies and economies.
To commemorate this day in Belize, a Water and Jobs summit was held in Belmopan and Belize City on March 15 and 16, where the importance of water was discussed.
