By Aaron Humes: It appears the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala has taken a stand on its citizens coming to Belize.
Following a vote, a resolution was passed warning Guatemalan citizens of the dangers of traveling to Belize because of the likelihood of human rights violations committed by the Belize Defence Force.
So, will this affect those who are conducting illegal activities in Belize’s protected areas? Prime Minister Dean Barrow refused to get his hopes up, calling the decision “unfortunate” and “regrettable” but refusing to get into a back and forth with the other side.
From the PUP, Senator Eamon Courtenay seemed to take the Guatemalans at their word, saying that he hoped that the resolution is particularly read and understood by those living near the borders and by the army, whose responsibility it will be to keep out the illegals.
But if it is directed solely at the BDF, then it was “a childish game” that needed to be condemned.
