By Aaron Humes: On Monday, Belize observed Labour Day, the celebration of workers generally and their contributions to the nation.
On May 1, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) hosted a parade and rally in Belize City. President Marvin Mora tells us it was not well-attended, and that is because the labour movement is “labouring” to remain relevant in modern society.
Mora notes that the trade union movement is under attack from many directions: “free loaders” who accept the benefits of unionism including better working conditions but refuse to stand up and be counted; the Government and other traditional anti-labour organizers.
Nonetheless, Mora thanks their supporters for continuing to stand by them.
In related news, the Occupational Safety and Health Bill was introduced in the House of Representatives in 2014 and has had a first reading.
It is intended to protect workers in all occupations from conditions that would make them unable to work or impede their ability to work.
Since then little has been heard about it, as the Bill has been stuck in “consultation hell” between the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) and the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI).
According to NTUCB President Marvin Mora, the bill still has some detractors, but the Congress is willing to work with those that have some concerns.
Finally, Mora weighed in on the recent regulations passed under the Public Safety Act.
According to Mora, the Congress is concerned to the point of anger. It was to meet this week to formulate a formal response.
