By Aaron Humes: With assurances from Belize and Guatemala that they are moving toward – subject to national approval by referenda – a peaceful, court-mediated settlement of the territorial dispute, the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) has approved a Declaration of Support at its meeting in the Dominican Republic.

The Antigua Observer reports through the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that according to Minister for Foreign Affairs of Belize Wilfred Elrington, Belize aims for the International Court of Justice in the future and peace between the neighbors in the present.

Meanwhile, Guatemala’s Foreign Minister, Carlos Raul Morales, saluted the role played by the OAS as mediator, including developing local economic projects in the communities along the adjacency zone.

The statements by the two foreign ministers come as both countries prepare for the next round of negotiation scheduled for June 21.
