By Aaron Humes: Police in Belize City say they had finally gotten their hands on one of the persons suspected to be involved in the Sunday evening murder of 34 year old Marlon Bonner, Elroy Perdomo. But no sooner than he was let go this morning than so-called “street justice” was delivered to him – efficiently and ruthlessly.
Perdomo was fatally shot no less than 16 times on Vernon Street earlier Thursday afternoon. Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, Officer Commanding Eastern Division (South), said Perdomo had been behind a funeral procession – though not part of it – when a gunman opened fire from a passing vehicle with a 9-millimeter firearm. Perdomo was rushed to hospital but died.
ACP Williams notes that police had had a hard time getting statements on the Bonner murder, but those willing to cooperate with police pointed to Perdomo as the suspected trigger man. He explains that Perdomo was being questioned about the murder of Bonner but was let go as no one could link him personally.
Police tried to keep Perdomo in custody by inquiring if he had any outstanding court issues but eventually had to let him go around 11 in the morning. He was dead within six hours.
Police have no leads as yet and Williams stated that there are no links to any member of the Bonner family, despite allegations that a cousin was warning of a “shootout”.
