NEMO provides assistance to farmers affected by fires

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, a team from the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) visited affected villages in Toledo and shared much needed relief supplies for the affected families.

In addition, a Damage Assessment Team continues the work of determining the cost of the damage and loss to expedite support to those affected.

Recently, Minister Oscar Requena and CEO in the Ministry of Rural Transformation Valentino Shal  visited some of the affected villages in Toledo who have suffered losses due to the ongoing fires.

Earlier this week, CEOs were also briefed on the situation.

“NEMO continues to support the suppression of fires with the BDF, Coast Guard along with village and NGO volunteers.

 The roll out of relief aid to families who have suffered loss especially of food source started rolling out today,” CEO Shal said.

CEO Shal commended the BDF who have been battling the fires since mid-May.

“There is a heroic story that was shared with us where they undertook a 7-hour rescue mission for a mother and her two children who were trapped in their farm by the fire

They were rescued safely and taken to PG for medical attention. The work continues,” CEO Shal added.

Farmers in Western and Southern Belize are devastated by the destruction caused by fires.
