Dominican Republic beat Puerto Rico 63-52, top Group A at FIBA U18 AmeriCup

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Dominican Republic gained revenge for the loss at the 2023 Under 17 Centrobasket Championship beating Puerto Rico 63-52 on Wednesday at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup at the Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The Dominican Republic finished atop Group A with a perfect 3-0 record after victories over Canada (2-1) and Venezuela (1-2), who finished second and third respectively. Puerto Rico finished in last place with a dismal 0-3 record.

Adrian Brito and Fernando de los Santos led the Dominican Republic with 14 points while Isaiah Brown scored 15 for Puerto Rico. Alejandro Avilés netted 14.

Earlier Canada defeated Venezuela 89-53.

In the Group B games today, Brazil (1-1) face the United States (2-0) at 2:40 pm. Belize (1-1) close off the first round against winless Argentina (0-2) at 5:10 pm (8:10 pm Argentina time) in Group B. (To see the game, click here.)

Currently, the United States (2-0) lead Group B ahead of Belize (1-1), Brazil (1-1), and Argentina (0-2). Final group standings will be determined by the end of the day.

All eight teams advance to the playoffs on Friday where the number one seeded team from one group will play the fourth from the other and the second seeded will take on the third seeded from the other. On Saturday, Friday’s winners play the semifinals and the losing teams face each other in ranking games.

The Final ranking games, including the Final and third place game, will be played on Sunday.
