International News: Russia deploys warships to Caribbean; Signaling growing global tensions

The Russian vessels are expected to potentially make port calls in Venezuela and Cuba, establishing a military presence in the Western Hemisphere. While US officials describe this presence as notable, they do not consider it an immediate concern. The exercise, which will be under US military surveillance, will involve a limited number of Russian ships and support vessels.

This is not the first time Russia has deployed ships to the Caribbean. However, the timing of this exercise is significant, as Russian President Vladimir Putin has hinted at potential “asymmetrical steps” in response to President Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to use US-provided weapons to strike within Russia.

Unnamed senior Biden administration officials revealed that the exercise is part of Russia’s broader response to US support for Ukraine, but it also serves as an opportunity for Putin to showcase his navy’s global power projection capabilities after suffering losses in the Black Sea due to Ukrainian strikes.

While Russia did not notify the US of the pending exercise, the US Navy has been tracking the ships’ movements. Despite the lack of notification, officials emphasized that all militaries have the right to conduct exercises in international waters.

The Russian ships are expected to remain in the region throughout the summer, with potential follow-up exercises in the Caribbean. The US Congress was informed of the upcoming Russian exercises on Wednesday.
