By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Amidst a severe heat wave and drought in Mexico, wildlife is suffering immensely.

Non-governmental groups are stepping in to rescue distressed animals like monkeys and birds, while the government’s efforts seem focused on cooling down animals in state-run zoos, such as providing lions with frozen meat popsicles.

The heat dome, centered over the southern Gulf of Mexico and northern Central America, has exacerbated the situation, particularly impacting central and southern Mexico.

According to the Associated Press, NGOs like the Biodiversity Conservation of The Usumacinta group are playing a crucial role in rescuing and stabilizing animals, especially in the southern state of Tabasco, where many howler monkeys have died to heatstroke and dehydration.

Wildlife biologist Gilberto Pozo highlighted the dire situation, with many rescued animals arriving too late for stabilization.

The government has acknowledged the issue but has mostly provided support to NGO-led efforts. Some NGOs are struggling to fund their rescue operations and are seeking donations.

In the face of rising temperatures, even animals in wildlife parks like Selva Teneek are suffering, with birds and other species experiencing heat stress, dehydration, and malnutrition.

Rescuers have been working tirelessly to provide relief, even resorting to unconventional methods like shipping frozen dead rats for feeding.

Despite the grim situation, there is a glimmer of hope with incoming President environmental scientist, Claudia Sheinbaum, who has expressed a commitment to addressing environmental issues when she takes office in October.
