Belize City Defenders edge San Pedro Tiger Sharks 72-69, qualify to Belize Elite Basketball League Finals

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize City Defenders defeated the San Pedro Tiger Sharks 72-69 and qualified to the Belize Elite Basketball League Finals. On Friday night at the Belize City Civic Center, the Defenders finished the semifinal series with a 2-0 record over the Tiger Sharks and will now play the Finals against the Benny’s Belize Hurricanes.

Nigel Jones led the Belize City Defenders with 23 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. John Kelly netted 18 points, grabbed seven boards and made one assist and three steals. D’von Campbell scored 18 points, grabbed two rebounds and made seven assists and three steals. Richard Smith III recorded a double-double scoring ten and grabbing 16 rebounds.

Jihad Wright III was the San Pedro Tiger Sharks’ top scorer with 17 points. He grabbed seven rebounds and made two assists and four steals. Francis Arana scored 12 points, grabbed one rebound, and made four assists.  Gene Kelly chipped in 13 points and three rebounds.

The Defenders won Game One 86-79 on May 19.

The Hurricanes also defeated the EZ Investments Griga Dream Ballers 2-0 routing them 105-70  on May 19 at the Belize City Center and then taking them down again at the Russell ‘Chiste’ Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga 90-83 on May 24.

The three-game Finals get underway on June 21 at the Belize City Civic Center. Game 2 is set for Friday, June 28 and Game 3 for Friday, July 5.
