By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Eighteen-year-old Griga Cycling Club rider Reynaldo White, who suffered a fractured shoulder when he was knocked down on the Hummingbird Highway on Monday, June 10, will have to rest his bike for six weeks.
According to Annis Alma Gordon, secretary of the Griga Cycling Club, the doctor at the Southern Regional Hospital who attended to White advised him to stay away from his bike for that period. That means White won’t be able to compete in the National Road Championships set for June 23 and 30.
Gordon said White and team captain Tamron Morris, 17, were knocked down from behind just after 1:00 pm about five miles from Dangriga as they were returning from a 40-mile training ride that had taken them to Mile 20. Griga Cycling Club teammate Deshane Cacho, 16, escaped unhurt as he was riding a bit ahead of White and Morris, but was quite shaken.
The trio were training for their participation in the National Road Championships. While White will have to sit it out, Morris and Cacho will be competing.
“Reynaldo White is at home still in pain but is ok and was advised to be off his bike for at least six weeks, he is very disappointed as he had high intentions to participate in the upcoming National Road Championship,” Annis Alma Gordon, secretary of the Griga Cycling Club, said in a social media on Tuesday.
“Tamron Morris is doing well and still achy but ready to go back to his daily training. Deshane Cacho is still Shaken after the ordeal but anxiously waiting for his captain to say let’s go on a ride. God is good and great.”

Today Saturday, according to Gordon, Morris and Cacho are back on their bikes though. White is still recovering but when he’s ready to train he will need a new bike as his was damaged during the accident. Gordon said they have not yet been contacted by the driver but that the police told them that if they didn’t agree on a settlement to call them for assistance.
“His bike is damaged,” Gordon told Breaking Belize News.
“The back wheel is bent, the spokes are broken, his seat is torn, the handle rack is torn. And Tamron’s speedometer is missing. And we haven’t heard from the driver as yet.”
On Monday, Gordon told Breaking Belize News that the driver stopped and waited for police to arrive. A passerby took the boys to the Southern Regional Hospital where they were treated and released.
“Griga Cycling Club would like to express our sincere gratitude to the man in the black vehicle who stopped to render assistance and called the police, to the lady who took the boys to the hospital we don’t who you two good samaritans are nor know your names, but want you to know we are very grateful,” Gordon said in her Tuesday post.
“Everyone who reached out to us via phone calls, text messages or visits to the hospital thank you. Mr. Levy’s Tortilla Factory for reaching out to our Manager thank you. To Ordonez Bike Shop , Cycling Federation of Belize, ms. Leticia Westby and the entire cycling community home and abroad ,thank you. News 5 Live , Breaking Belize News and XTV/Krem News for reaching out to us and share our story as we bring awareness to drivers to be vigilant when they see cyclists on the road. Together we can do this.”
Recently on May 17, Jashawn Aldana of the Chavarria’s Cycling Club was knocked down a while on a training ride from Georgeville to Belmopan on the George Price Highway.
Cyclists use the roads daily for training purposes and, as we said before, they risk their lives every day on the highways.
