By Aaron Humes: According to Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR), it has milled more than 945 thousand tonnes of cane through 23 crop weeks ending on June 9.
This is behind last year’s pace as the season ended in mid-June but BSI/ASR is likely to finish with more than a million tonnes ground after falling just shy last year.
Just over 97 thousand tons of sugar has been produced through June 9, about six thousand tons behind last year.
Other indicators suggest that the crop quality is improving, meaning prices can match last year’s record high.
The countdown is on to the closing of the season as rains have belatedly taken hold of much of the country including the sugar-producing north.
