UDP’s Philip Willoughby announces marriage to political opponent’s daughter – insists he will stay on as candidate

By Aaron Humes: United Democratic Party Standard Bearer for Port Loyola, Phillip Willoughby, has announced his marriage to Andrea Cordova Usher, the daughter of incumbent area representative Gilroy Usher Sr.

A text message obtained by Channel 7 News quotes Willoughby as saying that despite the unusual circumstances he plans to continue as standard bearer, writing, “I would like to state on record that my resolve to become the next Area Representative for the Port Loyola constituency remains steadfast along with my unwavering commitment to my Party, the great United Democratic Party.”

Willoughby said the romance predated either man’s entry into politics, 17 years ago. For much of that time, it was long-distance and off-on as Andrea lived in the United States although they maintained some communication. But it was a visit home earlier this year that convinced the pair they still loved each other and, when he subsequently visited the U.S. weeks later, they chose to get married on April 18 in the State of Connecticut.

Willoughby says the matter is ultimately personal and private and continues, “This decision is one of the heart and out of love.” Nonetheless, he calls on his colleagues to “Allow me to live and love and still care for my beautiful people of Port Loyola.”

Politically mixed marriages are rare but not uncommon but whether this one will be tolerated remains to be seen.

Neither Usher nor the UDP have issued public comment or indeed congratulations to the happy couple. But BBN is pleased to offer congratulations to the newlyweds and best of luck in their relationship.
