By Horace Palacio: The Institute of Archaeology (NICH) Belize has announced the immediate closure of the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave due to rising water levels. This world-renowned archaeological site, known for its ancient Maya artifacts and skeletal remains, will remain off-limits to visitors until further notice.
NICH is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as conditions change. Visitor and staff safety is paramount, and the decision to close the cave was made with this in mind.
The ATM Cave, located in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, is a major cultural and historical attraction. Its closure will undoubtedly affect the local tourism industry, but NICH assures the public that safety remains their top priority.
Visitors with existing ATM Cave tour bookings should contact their tour operators for more information. For updates on the cave’s reopening, follow NICH on Facebook.
