University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union (UBFSU) calls out PUP government for unfulfilled promises

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Today, the University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union (UBFSU) issued a statement expressing disappointment with the People’s United Party (PUP) for not fulfilling its commitments to the University of Belize (UB).

“The PUP previously condemned the decision of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Government to slash UB’s subvention by 24.2%, reducing funding from $11 million to $8.34 million. This severe cut was expected to lead to a reduction in programs offered by UB and the likely termination of faculty and staff members,” the UBFSU said.

“Despite recognizing the country’s economic crisis at the time, the PUP labeled the decision as misguided and counterproductive. They acknowledged the pivotal role of UB as the national university and the flagship of Belize’s education system. The PUP highlighted that funding to UB had only increased by $1 million over a decade, severely undermining the university’s capacity to grow and develop,” the union added.

The union says that the PUP committed to restoring and increasing UB’s annual subvention over the next five years, promising increased resources, greater accountability, improved quality of education, and a stronger commitment to national service and development.

“However, with deep frustration, the UBFSU notes the PUP’s failure to follow through on these promises. Despite the party’s strong rhetoric and stated commitments, UB continues to face significant financial challenges, and the promised increase in funding has not materialized,” the union expressed.

The UBFSU further called on the PUP to honor its commitments to the University of Belize and its faculty, staff, and students.

The Union demanded the immediate restoration and increase of UB’s funding, as well as the recognition and inclusion of the UBFSU in all relevant Board meetings and decisions.
