UEFA Euro 2024: Portugal beat Türkiye 3-0, advance to Round of 16

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Portugal defeated Türkiye 3-0 at the BVB Stadion Dortmund in Dortmund, Germany and punched their ticket to the Round of 16 at the UEFA European Championship (EURO2024).

Bernardo Silva struck the first goal in the 21^st minute. Seven minutes later Samet Akaydin attempted a pass back to his goalkeeper scoring in his own goal for 2-0 Portugal lead.

Bruno Fernandes sealed the 3-0 victory tapping in an unselfish cross from captain Cristiano Ronaldo in the 56^th minute.

While Portugal advance with six points, Türkiye, who have three, will have to wait for next Wednesday, June 26, when they close against Czechia.

Earlier, Czechia and Georgia gained their first point after a 1-1 draw which keeps both of them alive ahead of Matchday 3 next Wednesday. While Czechia attempt to qualify against Türkiye, Georgia will do so against Portugal.

Saturday’s action closes with the Group E encounter between Romania, who have three points, and Belgium, who dropped their first game. After Friday’s Ukraine 2-1 win over Slovakia, those two teams also have three points.

Romania advance if they win on Saturday but if they draw or lose, nobody would be qualified until Matchday 3 on Wednesday, June 26.

For their part, a victory for Belgium victory forces a four-way tie in points ahead of Matchday 3 on Wednesday, June 26. A draw keeps them alive but they would be hard-pressed to qualify.
