By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Poland were already eliminated coming into Tuesday’s game but still gave France good competition in the 1-1 draw played at BVB Stadion Dortmund in Dortmund, Germany in the UEFA European Championship (EURO2024).
With five points to their credit, France advanced to the Round of 16 finishing second in Group D behind leaders Austria, who stunned Netherlands 3-2, finishing top of the group. Poland, with only one point, was eliminated after the second group game.
Mbappé, playing with a mask due his broken nose, converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute after Ousmane Dembele was fouled running into the penalty box.
Robert Lewandowski tied the game on a second-try penalty pick in the 79th minute.
In the Round of 16, France will face the second-place team from Group E (Romania/Belgium/Slovakia/Ukraine). Austria will take on the second-seeded team from Group F (Portugal/Türkiye/Czechia/Georgia) on Tuesday, July 2. And the Netherlands will match up against the winners of Group C, Spain, or the winner of Group E.
