UEFA Euro 2024: Austria shock Netherlands 3-2, qualify to Round of 16 top of Group E

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Austria gave a stellar performance on Tuesday defeating favoured Netherlands 3-2 at Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany in the UEFA European Championship (EURO2024).

Austria took the lead with an own goal from Donyell Malen in the sixth minute. Their other goals came from Romano Schmid in the 59^th and Player of the Match Marcel Sabitzer in the 80th minute.

Netherlands got on the scorecard through Cody Gakpo in the 47^th and Memphis Depay in the 75^th.

Austria celebrated winning consecutive matches for the first time in a major tournament since the 1982 FIFA World Cup and qualified to the Euro knockout round for a second consecutive time as well.

Austria advanced to the Round of 16 on six points as the top team in Group D. They were followed by France who totalled five points after their 1-1 draw with Poland.

Netherlands, who were tied in points with France prior to Tuesday’s fixtures, remained stuck with four points but will advance as one of the best third place teams.

Poland, with on solitary point, had already been eliminated.

In the Round of 16, Austria will take on the second-seeded team from Group F (Portugal/Türkiye/Czechia/Georgia) on Tuesday, July 2. France will face the second-place team from Group E (Romania/Belgium/Slovakia/Ukraine). And the Netherlands will match up against the winners of Group C, Spain, or the winner of Group E.
