By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Led by Player of the Match James Rodríguez, Colombia got past a feisty Paraguay 2-1 in their first match in the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 on Monday night at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
Playing in his fourth Copa América, James was behind Colombia’s two goals against the Paraguayans. From the left side, he assisted Daniel Muñoz who headed the ball into the net in the 32nd minute. A while later, in the 42nd minute, he sent a free kick into the box where Jefferson Lerma headed past the Paraguayan goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead.
Julio Enciso scored Paraguay’s only goal in the 69th minute.
In the other match Costa Rica shocked Brazil holding them to a 0-0 draw.
Colombia now lead the group with three points, ahead of Brazil (1), Costa Rica (1), and Paraguay (0).
On Friday, June 28, Colombia will face Costa Rica State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona while Paraguay tackle Brazil at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
