Ministry of Agriculture holds 3-day banana disease Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (FOC TR4) Simulation Exercise

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The three-day banana disease Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (FOC TR4) Simulation Exercise held by the Ministry of Agriculture starts on Wednesday, June 26 and runs until Friday, June 28.

Presenters from Brazil, Colombia, and Honduras are conducting the exercise which begins at Dream Valley Resort in Teakettle, Cayo, moves to Central Farm on Thursday, and closes at banana farms in the Stann Creek District on Friday.

The Fusarium Wilt disease is considered one of the most devastating soil borne fungal pathogens of banana worldwide, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said.

“The event will feature three international banana specialists from Brazil, Colombia, and Honduras, who will lead comprehensive discussions and hands-on activities addressing FOC TR4,” MAFSE said.

“This event promises to be an insightful and impactful experience, bringing together specialists, farmers, and international stakeholders in the banana industry to strategize and collaborate on combating FOC TR4.

The Simulation Exercise Event will review the following topics:

– Project Achievements on Fusarium Foc R4T Prevention in Central America

– Quarantine Pests of Economic Importance

– Fusarium Wilt TR4: Lessons Learned and Challenges for the OIRSA Region

– Advances in Developing Fusarium Oxysporum f. sp. Cubense TR4 Resistant Banana

Varieties

– Steps to Address a Suspected Quarantine Pest Event: Case Foc R4T

– General Aspects of Foc R4T Management: An Epidemiological Approach

– Progress on Foc R4T Prevention Measures by Banana Growers Association

– Simulation Exercise Dynamics by BAHA

– Use of Satellite Images for Pathogen Detection

– Biosecurity Measures at Ports and Airports by OIRSA

– Pathogen Diagnosis Simulation in Musa Species

– Containment and Eradication Simulation by BAHA

The exercise will also include a Canine Unit Demonstration by BAHA.
