By Aaron Humes: For the first time ever, the September 7 Carnival Road March will not start on Southside – indeed it will be entirely confined to the Northside of the City.
The Belize National Celebrations Commission (NCC), of which the Belize Carnival Association is an esteemed member has officially announced that the parade route will start at Memorial Park, cover the length of Marine Parade, Newtown Barracks and Princess Margaret Drive to finish at Marion Jones Stadium.
An official statement said, “This adjustment reflects our commitment to enhancing the overall experience for all participants, spectators, and the wider community.”
The judging area will cover the entire length of Digi Park on Newtown Barracks.
After experiencing logistical challenges over recent years, the Commission said it explored several alternative routes to find the best option to eliminate these challenges. In collaboration with the Belize Carnival Association and the Police Department, two test runs were conducted along the proposed route. Subsequently, the Police and the Association recommended this route as it addressed the standing logistical concerns and offered an excellent opportunity for an enhanced carnival experience.
The Carnival Association then put the proposed route to a vote among its members, and the majority expressed their support for it.
This new route ensures smoother traffic management, improved participant safety, and increased accessibility for spectators, allowing everyone to fully immerse themselves in the vibrant festivities. The NCC, in collaboration with its partners, such as the Belize Police Department and the Belize City Council, will soon launch a public awareness campaign for Carnival Road
March regarding safety, improved community engagement, traffic
management, and the sale and consumption of liquor.
The Road March’s reputation for revelry has suffered with reports of violent incidents along the route and even before during the pre-dawn Jouvert celebrations, with the worthiness of the major bridges including the Belchina and Belcan Bridges also a concern.
