National Community Oriented Policing Unit awards 11 scholarships to students across Belize

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today the National Community Oriented Policing Unit of the Belize Police Department awarded 11 high school and sixth form students with scholarships to continue their studies.

Commander of Community Policing Howell Gillett noted that this has become an annual event dating back to 2018.

“A study of the Caribbean by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean asserts that if a child is allowed to stay in school up to age 17, the chances of that child becoming involved in crime, reduces by 50 percent.

We at the Unit also believe that supporting our young people through educational opportunities will net great benefits.

These students were handpicked by the Community Policing officers working in the different precincts. These children might otherwise not have access to continue their studies,” Gillett explained.

Gillett says that Education can be a crucial factor in breaking the cycle of poverty, providing these children with the tools to secure better employment opportunities and improve their socioeconomic status.

In addition, when law enforcement supports the education of vulnerable children, it fosters positive relationships between the police and the community.

“It shows that law enforcement cares about the well-being and future of all community members, which can enhance trust and cooperation,” Gillett added.
