Price of vegetables continue to soar particularly for tomotoes, cabbage and onion

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) showed that for the month of May, higher food prices were notable.

The inflation rate for ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ stood at 6.5 percent for the month, largely due to higher prices for food items.

The cost of fresh vegetables rose by a whopping 17%.

Particularly the prices of tomatoes went from $2.66 to $3.20 per pound and cabbage from $1.57 to $2.62 per pound.

In addition, SIB data showed a price increase in meat products, such as beef, poultry, and cow foot (3.6 percent); dairy products, including powdered milks (5.4 percent); fruits such as avocados, apples, grapes, and watermelons (9.9percent); fish and other sea foods (15.6 percent); and sugar (8.6 percent).

Overall, consumer prices were up by 4% in May.
