By Aaron Humes: Addressing the constant and chronic shortage of labour especially in agricultural industries, the Executive has approved the planning of a full-time Seasonal Migrant Workers Program.
This program intends to promote the ethical recruitment of workers and enhance accountability and efficacy to improve labor migration processes and employment outcomes for migrant workers and other stakeholders in the areas of agriculture and construction.
A lack of labourers has hampered Belize’s three major agricultural industries – sugar, banana, and especially citrus.
As we reported in 2022 with regard to the citrus industry, migrants seeking higher wages in Belize find themselves hampered by fees for entry.
