By Aaron Humes: A wary region is keeping a close eye on Category 4 Hurricane Beryl as it bears down on the Eastern Caribbean.
On Monday, the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) will hold a press conference in Belize City at the Fisheries Department Conference Room at 1:30 in the afternoon.
The National Meteorological Service is currently monitoring Hurricane Beryl, which has intensified to Category 4 status. Hurricane Beryl is the easternmost hurricane and major hurricane of Category 3 level or higher to form in the tropical Atlantic during June, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Beryl rapidly intensified into a Category 4 hurricane Sunday after first becoming a tropical depression on Friday, then a tropical storm early Saturday morning and first hurricane of the season Saturday afternoon.
As of 3 p.m. Belize time according to the National Hurricane Center, Beryl is about 250 miles southeast of Barbados and is moving west-northwest at 18 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour.
Beryl will cross the Windward Islands early tomorrow morning, Monday, and track across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea during the next few days.
By Friday morning the system is forecast to make landfall anywhere from Belize to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico as a category 2 hurricane.
There has been a slight northward shift in the forecast track following the global models. However, a lot of uncertainty remains and the Met Service continues monitoring Beryl closely. If watches are required, they will need to be issued by late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
