National Security Council to be established by law

By Aaron Humes: Belize has had a National Security Council and Directorate since the mid-1990s but it was not established by law.

The current Government will change that with an Act of Parliament designed, Prime Minister John Briceno said, to address current and future security issues by enhancing inter-agency cooperation; identifying and neutralizing threats; and addressing critical areas with funding and direction.

While the threats we face may differ from larger countries like the United States, Belize needs to be no less prepared, said the Prime Minister, to both meet the challenges of today and prepare for the uncertainties of tomorrow.

The Bill was referred to the National Security and Immigration Committee of the House.
