Copa América 2024:  Costa Rica beat Paraguay 2-1, miss out on Quarterfinals

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Costa Rica secured a 2-1 victory in their final match of the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 at the Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, USA on Tuesday, July 2.

Costa Rica took the lead very early in the match. Francisco Calvo headed home from the edge of the six-yard box in the 3^rd minute and 19-year-old Josimar Alcocer powered past several players and scored from outside the box in the seventh minute.

Ramón Sosa nailed the ball into the top corner for Paraguay in the 55^th minute. The South Americans had a great opportunity to level the score in stoppage time but Costa Rica’s goalkeeper, Patrick Sequeira, denied them making a fingertip save.

Costa Rica finished Group D with four points behind Uruguay (7 points) and Brazil (5) and failed to advance to the Quarterfinals. Despite their exit, Costa Rica played with determination and left the tournament with their heads held high. They started out with a 0-0 draw against Brazil but fell 3-0 to Colombia before Tuesday’s win over Paraguay.

Paraguay had a dismal performance losing all their three games.

Colombia will face Panama in the Quarterfinals while Brazil will tackle Uruguay on Saturday,  July 6.
