By Aaron Humes: With more persons nominated than seats to be filled, a by-election for the electoral division of Toledo East is scheduled for Wednesday, July 17. 7,725 electors are registered to participate in the contest.
The candidates nominated on Tuesday, July 2 are, in alphabetical order: William “Wil” Maheia, People’s National Party (PNP); Osmond Reynaldo Martinez, People’s United Party (PUP); and Dennis “Desho” Williams, United Democratic Party (UDP).
The list of polling stations is as follows: Polling area 109 (All areas except Indianville), St. Peter Claver R. C. School, Punta Gorda Town; Polling area 109 (Indianville Only), St. Benedict R. C. School, Punta Gorda Town; Polling areas 109A, 110 & 112, Cattle Landing Community Center; Polling areas 111 & 112A, Punta Gorda Methodist School, Punta Gorda Town; Polling area 113, Our Lady of Bella Vista R. C. School; Polling area 115, Monkey River Community Center; Polling area 116 St. Joseph R. C. School, Barranco Village; Polling area 117, Sacred Heart R. C. School, Crique Sarco Village; Polling area 118, St. Mark R. C. School, Otoxha Village; and Polling area 119, Little Flower R. C. School, Forest Home Village. Counting will take place at Toledo Community College (TCC) in the New Area of Punta Gorda.
The trio are running to succeed the late Mike Espat, who died unexpectedly in April.
The major parties have been assigned their usual colors of blue and red respectively while Maheia’s ballot paper color is green.
The usual election notices apply as to restrictions on the sale of liquor during voting hours (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.), time off for voting, prohibition on carrying and using loudspeakers, bunting, ensigns, banners, standards, set of colors or flags as political propaganda; meetings and solicitation of voters; keeping the vote secret; use of mobile telephones or other electronics within polling stations; and possession of firearms.
