By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) notes that Hurricane Beryl has strengthened to Category 3 as it nears the Yucatan Peninsula.
As of tonight, Beryl was located some 160 miles East southeast of Tulum, Mexico.
Beryl is moving toward the west-northwest near 20 mph (31 km/h).
A westward to west- northwestward motion is expected during the next day or so, with the center expected to make landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula early Friday morning.
Beryl is expected to emerge over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico Friday night and move northwestward toward northeastern Mexico and southern Texas late in the weekend.
Maximum sustained winds are near 110 mph (175 km/h) with higher gusts.
Slow weakening is forecast before the center makes landfall, with rapid weakening expected while Beryl crosses the Yucatan Peninsula. Slow re-intensification is expected when Beryl moves over the Gulf of Mexico.
A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, including Cozumel.
A tropical storm watch remains in effect for the coast of Belize from Corozal to Belize District including San Pedro and Caye Caulker.
