By Horace Palacio: Caribbean leaders convened an emergency meeting today to coordinate a regional response to the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl, which recently ripped through the region as a Category 4 storm. Belize Prime Minister John Briceño joined fellow leaders in pledging support for immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts.
The hurricane made landfall on Carriacou Island in Grenada on Monday, leaving at least five dead and many missing. Rescue operations are ongoing, with concerns the death toll may climb.
Prime Minister Briceño announced Belize’s commitment to sending financial aid and technical support, including crews to help restore power. “We stand in solidarity with our Caribbean brothers and sisters,” he said.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves issued an urgent appeal for international aid, highlighting the disproportionate impact of climate change on small island nations. “We are on the frontline of climate change,” he said. “We need the global community to support us in rebuilding and enhancing our resilience.”
The emergency meeting, held under the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), underscored the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to mutual aid in times of crisis.
