By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Portugal’s João Félix slammed the ball on the goalpost in the penalty shootout while France didn’t miss any. France went on to win the Quarterfinals match at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany 5-3 on penalties and advanced to the Semifinals of the UEFA European Championship (EURO2024).
The 90 minutes and extra time finished in a 0-0 deadlock forcing the penalty shootout between French and Portuguese, who have been rather ineffective at scoring goals during regulation and extra time at this tournament.
Ousmane Dembélé beat Diogo Costa, who had been the star in the Quarterfinals shootout over Slovenia last Monday, to put France ahead 1-0.
Cristiano Ronaldo equalized with a well-placed shot to goalkeeper Mike Maignan’s right.
Youssouf Fofana put France ahead 2-1 but Bernardo Silva levelled at 2-2.
Then, Jules Koundé converted for France, ahead of Félix hitting the woodwork putting Portugal at a disadvantage.
Bradley Barcola increased France’s lead to 4-2 but Nuno Mendes kept pace keeping Portugal alive with the score at 4-3.
But then, Theo Hernández zipped the ball past Costa’s right, sealing the deal for France and sending Portugal packing.
In the Semifinals, France will face Spain, who beat Germany 2-1 in extra time earlier on Friday. Their match is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Tuesday July 9.
The Quarterfinals will be completed on Saturday with England facing Switzerland at 10:00 am and the Netherlands taking on Türkiye at 1:00 pm.
