By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On July 6, 2024, Belize joined in recognizing International Day of Co-operatives (#CoopsDay).
This marks the 30th International Day of Cooperatives as recognized by the United Nations and the 102nd International Cooperative Day as deemed by the International Cooperative Alliance.
The Ministry of Agriculture noted that the aim of Coops Day is to increase awareness of cooperatives and promote the movement’s ideas of international solidarity, economic efficiency, equality, and world peace.
Since 1995, the International Cooperative Alliance and the United Nations through the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives have jointly set the theme for the celebration of Coops Day.
This year’s theme is “Cooperatives Building a Better Future for All.”
The Ministry noted that a local event to commemorate the day was rescheduled due to the approach of the hurricane. From Concepcion Vegetable Farmers in Corozal to Hibiscus Mayan Arts in Toledo; First Stop Taxi in Belize City to San Antonio Women in Cayo, the co-operative sector and ‘movement’ is active and alive.
This day will also build the momentum towards the 2025 International Year of Cooperatives, which was declared by the UN last year.
