By Aaron Humes: Belize has taken significant steps towards joining three important international treaties concerning the protection and rights of children and older persons.
The Cabinet recently approved the decision to introduce legislation in the National Assembly for Belize to accede to the Hague Conference on Private International Law. This intergovernmental organization provides legal mechanisms and protocols for enforcing the human rights of children and supports the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Furthermore, the Cabinet has also approved plans for ratifying the Convention on the Protection of Children and the Recovery of Child Support and other forms of Family Maintenance. By doing so, Belize aims to benefit from a legally harmonized framework that promotes international cooperation on matters related to children’s rights.
Lastly, the Cabinet has lent its support to introducing legislation in the National Assembly for Belize to accede to the Inter-American Convention on Older Persons. Plans are also underway to develop legislation to uphold the rights and freedoms outlined in the Convention.
