By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Two Belize Men’s Youth National Team players, Devin Garbutt and Daijon Daniels, will be travelling to Jamaica on Tuesday, July 9, for a two-month trial with the winningest Jamaican Premier League (JPL) team, Portmore United FC.
The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) said the players will remain in Jamaica until August 31, 2024.
“This trial marks a crucial step in their young careers, offering them the chance to showcase their talents and potential in an international setting,” the FFB said in a statement on Monday.
“Should they impress during their trial period, there is the possibility of signing a professional contract with Portmore United FC, a club renowned for its commitment to developing young talent.”
Portmore United Football Club is Jamaica’s most decorated professional football team having won seven league championships (two as Hazard United FC), five national cups, and two Caribbean Club Championships.
The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) said they are fully supportive of Garbutt and Daniels because of ‘the significance of this opportunity for Belizean football’.
“Trials such as these not only benefit the individual players but also contribute to the overall growth and visibility of football in Belize,” the FFB said.
Portmore United finished fourth in the Jamaica Premier League 2023/24 championship with 49 points, ten less than winners Mount Pleasant Football Academy. The JPL consists of 14 clubs, including clubs like Cavalier, Harbour View, Tivoli Gardens, Arnett Gardens, Waterhouse, and Montego Bay United.
