Former Verdes, JUBE players honour Guatemalan coach Carlos Hernández in Benque Viejo del Carmen

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A group of former Verdes and Juventud Benqueña (JUBE), ‘Unidos Por Don Carlos Hernández’, are holding a special ceremony at the Edmund Marshalleck Football Stadium to honour Guatemalan coach Carlos Hernández on Thursday in Benque Viejo del Carmen.

Hernandez, who first started out as a player coach and then a full time coach, was instrumental in developing the teams in their early beginnings in the seventies and early eighties.

Both Verdes and JUBE played in Belize’s top level championship under the Belize National Football Association, which later became the Football Federation of Belize. Verdes went on to win several national championships both at the amateur level and now the Premier League of Belize. JUBE ceased to exist during the first years of the semi-pro league which later became the PLB.
Hernández, who is visiting Benque Viejo del Carmen, will be awarded a certificate of recognition for his work during the ceremony.

Last Sunday, the players hosted a barbeque in his honour.

Players such as Cesar ‘Checha’ Mendez, Hernan ‘Nan’ Contreras, Tony Castellanos, Jorge ‘Gurra’ Mena, Escott ‘Papo’ Coleman, Amin ‘Zorro’ Garcia, Orlando ‘Landy’ Archila, Gustavo ‘Gus’ Pech, Julio ‘Tono’ Llinas, Eddie Tun, Javier Torres, Marcos ‘Maco’ Barillas, Blas Guerra, Jose Cooch, Eddie Salazar, Amir ‘Mitch’ Pulido, Carlos Guerra, Edgar ‘Beans’ Avila, Nebo Gongora, Elio Jimenez, and Heraldo Rancharan, were present at the barbeque.
