“Buy Belizean:” Government pushes strategy to build up small businesses

By Aaron Humes: The Office of the Prime Minister, in partnership with BELTRAIDE, recently organized a thought-provoking Buy Belizean Information and Exchange session at the Phoenix Business Center in Belmopan. During this session, a diverse group of influential stakeholders from both the public and private sectors came together to engage in in-depth discussions and strategic planning to drive initiatives aimed at propelling the growth of local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The “Buy Belizean” initiative represents a pivotal component of the Government of Belize’s comprehensive strategy to actively promote the selection of locally produced goods, thereby providing much-needed support to Belizean businesses and playing a key role in bolstering national economic development. The interactive discussions during the session not only provided valuable insights but also facilitated a constructive exchange of ideas on how best to strengthen and expand the impact of the Buy Belizean initiative.

Key participants included representatives from various entities such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Investment Policy and Compliance Unit (IPCU), Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS), Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), Directorate General for Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Rural Development, Economic Development Council (EDC), Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth, BELTRAIDE, Ministry of Blue Economy, and the Government of Belize’s Press Office.

Dr. Leroy Almendarez, the Executive Director of BELTRAIDE, emphasized the paramount importance of nurturing local economic growth, elevating product quality, and cultivating sustainable business opportunities within Belize. He expressed his optimism by stating that the session marked a significant stride towards empowering our local economy and MSMEs, and he eagerly anticipated the continuation of collaborative efforts to further advance this undertaking.
