By Aaron Humes: Enrique George Herbert is back in Belize after serving 21 years of a 33-year and four-month sentence for conspiracy to traffic drugs into the United States, among other crimes, in 2004.
Since returning to Belize, Herbert has been processed at the Queen Street Police Station by the Gang Intelligence, Investigation, and Interdiction Unit and is required to sign in as part of the deportee monitoring program.
Herbert was deported after serving his time at the Federal Correctional Institution, Victorville in Adelanto, California. He was spirited to the U.S. and convicted for a scheme to import several tons of cocaine into the U.S. between March 2001 and August 2002, shipped from offshore Belize to Calderitas, Mexico, in collaboration with the Mexican Juarez Cartel and with the assistance of armed members of the George Street Gang.
His family filed suit against the Government over his removal from the country and won, receiving damages of $50,000 and court costs of $10,000.
