Belize Coast Guard rescues pair at sea after wave knocked them off jet ski

By Aaron Humes: An evening out on a jet ski ended uncomfortably for two San Pedro residents who needed rescuing by the Belize Coast Guard on Thursday night.

According to reports, Rolando Uk and Leni Elias left on a jet ski from the Secret Beach area north of San Pedro Town, where Uk manages a water park, around 4:30 in the afternoon. The duo did not return after several hours at sea, which prompted Uk’s family to become concerned.

Fearing something might have happened to him, Uk’s family notified the Belize Coast Guard which set out shortly afterwards.

Operations officer Lieutenant Junior Grade Mark Choc indicated that Elias was picked up by a civilian vessel shortly after ten, having swum for three hours to a shallow area off Bird Caye.

Uk was picked up around 11:30 p.m. in the open water three miles north of Secret Beach. Both were in good health. An investigation found that a wave had knocked the pair off the Jet ski into the water. No small craft caution was in effect at the time but the Coast Guard reminds that a check of weather conditions is important before venturing out to sea.
