By Jose Luis Cruz: The latest national polls indicate a significant shift in the 2024 presidential race as Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, has significantly narrowed the gap with Republican nominee Donald Trump. This change follows Joe Biden’s recent exit from the race and Harris’s subsequent campaign launch on Sunday.
The series of national polls taken in the US since Vice President Kamala Harris announced her decision to contest becoming the nominee for the Democratic Party do show a marked improvement for the Democrats, cutting their deficit approximately in half. A Wall Street Journal poll on Friday revealed that Harris is now in a statistical tie with Trump.
The New York Times/Siena poll, conducted on Thursday, highlighted Harris’s progress, showing that she had closed the gap by 6 to 7 percentage points, depending on whether third-party candidates were included.
Harris’s gains are largely attributed to shifts within the Democratic coalition, particularly among demographics that had grown disillusioned with Biden. For instance, Biden previously garnered just 59 percent of Black registered voters in The New York Times poll a month ago, while Harris now has the support of 69 percent. Similarly, she has increased the Democratic share of Hispanic voters to 57 percent from 45 percent and boosted support among younger voters.
The Wall Street Journal poll echoed these findings, indicating a surge in Democratic enthusiasm. Previously, only 37 percent of Biden voters expressed enthusiasm for his candidacy. In contrast, 81 percent of Harris voters now report being enthusiastic about her campaign.
The Republican side has also seen changes. Trump’s rating has risen since the failed assassination attempt on July 13. However, the expected post-convention boost was overshadowed by Biden’s withdrawal from the race. In response, the Trump campaign issued a memo on Tuesday, cautioning supporters about a “Harris Honeymoon” in the polls. Trump pollster Tony Fabrizio emphasized that Harris would experience an early bump in the polls, which is expected to last until the race stabilizes.
As the race progresses, both Democrats and Republicans are expected to closely monitor the trends that these polls generate.
