Press Release

The Ministry of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management (MBEDRM) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are excited to announce the implementation of the Project “Community Engagement of the Coastal Zone and Fisheries Sector of Belize Through Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Capacity Building”. The project, valued at 200,000 USD, is financed by the FAO Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) and is subject to the approval criteria to ensure its relevance, sustainability, and contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Due to its geographic location, Belize is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly those associated with climate change, such as hurricanes, drought, pests, and diseases. The majority of human settlements and major infrastructure in Belize are located within 25 miles from the coastline, where 57% of the population lives. This makes Belize particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change. This will require strengthening the resilience of coastal communities to secure a healthy and productive ocean.

Consequently, the project is designed to boost the resilience of the coastal zone and fisheries sector by enhancing management practices, stakeholder livelihoods, disaster risk management and awareness. Most of the project interventions are being piloted within four key coastal and fisheries communities, selected for their vulnerability to climate change. These interventions can be expanded to the other 27 coastal fishing communities, which vary in size and vulnerability.

The expected outputs of the Project include:

  1. Engagement strategy developed to increase the capacity of national actors and community members on climate change, climate adaptation and disaster risk management.
  2. Community-based CCA and DRM plans for coastal fishing communities developed.
  3. Didactic material for fisherfolk and coastal community members to improve literacy and financial management skills with a focus on climate change resilient livelihoods.
