Belize Coast Guard seizes cache of drugs and weapons near Deer Caye

By Horace Palacio: On September 8th, 2024, the Belize Coast Guard successfully seized a cache of drugs, ammunition, and high-powered rifles near Deer Caye, located northwest of Ambergris Caye.

According to official reports, during a routine search of the area, Coast Guard personnel discovered a white cooler covered with a grey canvas. Upon inspection, the cooler contained a black plastic bag holding various illegal items, including three parcels of suspected cannabis wrapped in transparent plastic. Additionally, the search uncovered a black AR-15 rifle (Colt) with an empty magazine, an AK-47 semi-automatic rifle with an empty magazine, and 21 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

No individuals were found near the location at the time of the operation. All confiscated items have been labeled as found property and are currently under investigation by authorities.

The Belize Coast Guard expressed its continued commitment to protecting the nation’s maritime borders and curbing illicit activities. This successful operation highlights the dedication and vigilance of the Coast Guard personnel in maintaining safety and security in Belizean waters.
