By Horace Palacio: Today, September 10th, marks a significant day in Belizean history as the nation comes together to celebrate St. George’s Caye Day, a national holiday commemorating the Battle of St. George’s Caye. This historic event, which took place from September 3rd to 10th, 1798, symbolizes the resilience and courage of the Baymen settlers, along with their enslaved African allies, who successfully defended the territory against a Spanish invasion.

The Battle of St. George’s Caye is a cornerstone of Belizean pride, representing the unity and determination that helped shape the nation. Despite being outnumbered, the Baymen and their supporters bravely fought off the Spanish forces, ensuring that Belize remained a British colony rather than falling under Spanish rule.

Today, Belizeans from all walks of life honor this victory with celebrations that include parades, flag-waving, and vibrant cultural festivities, all paying tribute to the bravery of those who fought to protect the land we now call home.

As we take a moment to reflect on this important chapter in Belize’s history, Breaking Belize News wishes all Belizeans a Happy September 10th! May this day remind us of the power of unity and the strength of our nation.
